Street Style May 2009

Veronique Gagnun

As we rang in 2009 we could already see and hear the hype revolving around trends being set by the "more" conscious consumers - "frugal chic" and "eco-chic". The awareness of quality and our impact on mother earth edges in, thankfully, more each year on social consciousness. Suggesting that we can buy more with less (a name isn't everything, nor is paying full price) and that new fabrics (in very luscious re-harvested fibers) feel great to wear (a bit pricier, but lasting longer and involve environmentally friendly practices). It's more common to see eco-chic and consignment shops giving alternative options to style savvy shoppers in Victoria. This month, we staked out the top end of Fort Street and caught Veronique Gagnon on her way to work.

Veronique, your top is such a refreshing colour, what colour would you call it?
"Actually, it's called Punch."
(And so well described, 'Punch' - it personally reminded me of watermelon Kool-Aid.)

Is it a silk or silk blend?
"I love this fabric - it's woven bamboo."
(The swooping u-shape neckline gathered in ruffles is a touch of "Goddess" - a look direct from the runways this spring.)

Is everything you are wearing Eco-Chic?
"As a matter of fact yes, I work at 'Not Just Pretty', (as she was heading that direction) and everything I have on is from there. These jeans are by 'Loomstate', an organic line of denim."

What makes your leather handbag eco-chic?
"It's a recycled leather jacket re-designed by Ashley Watson."
(It looked and felt brand new. The detailing and colour makes this a must have - it is the kind of handbag that easily transitions from one outfit to the next.)

Truly, all that was needed to finish off Vernoiques look was more weekends full of sunshine. I'm thrilled to title Vernoique's look - Spring Sunrise!

* To create an "in look" with the colours in your closet for this year, pair up bright colours with white, khaki, tan - all the neutrals, to keep your look fresh. Avoid adding them to plain old black - the '80's look (of bold bright colours with black) is out, apparently, not back!
